Ther e is a whole world of barrel aged “beer” and when I look for different kinds, the recommended stuff is all dark Porter s, scotch ales, and dark deathly stouts. Educate me Oppoholics. Post your barrel aged actual-ale suggestions. I like stouts like the next guy, but I’m not looking to get plowed under by the thick midnight itself! So please keep some color color. A nice brown evening shade of drink and up. Thanks!

A local brewery, Lickinghole Creek, makes a lot of barrel-aged ales that might be up your alley. I know they ship within Virginia, but not sure about outside the state.

Bourbon Barrel Ale is very vanilla flavored.

The name of that brewery could be problematic.

Belgian brown ale matured in sake barrels. I’m sure more will come to me than Oaked (Arrogant) Bastard.
I knew the one I was searching for would come to me. Duchesse De Bourgogne is aged in oak barrels for 18 months after two stages of fermentation. Highly recommendable, Flanders red ale.

I'm big into whiskey barrel aged red wine right now. So good

You’d think so, but that’s the name of the creek itself, which is much older.

Aren’t they based out of Goochland as well?

I love Duchesse. My wife can’t drink it anymore though. There’s wild yeast in it that she started reacting to. She gets a rash on her throat and face when she drinks it.

I like the Crianzas. Haven't tried grand reserva yet

Yeah, it’s literally in a barn. You go past Goochland Courthouse about 6 miles, take a right onto a back road, go off the back road onto a dirt road, then follow that about half a mile to the barn. They also have a second location in downtown Richmond.

staying away from porters and stouts this is my current favorite barrel aged product, though it is 10.8 ABV...

Why did I read that as Couchland?

It stands out as something I offer to people who don’t quite want to understand US beer is nowhere near the same as the very natural stuff Europe continues to protect by law. It does taste very good too.

Shiner has a good one. Not sure if still available...

Does Licking hole C reek pass through Goochland?
If so from above or below?

Yeah, nothing touches the Belgian stuff. Piraat is one of my favorites. I can drink, and that stuff will put you on your ass.

Good call. I actually had one of these in Belgium a couple years back.

Those directions make absolute sense.

If you get the chance, taste a tequila barrel-aged beer someday. I don’t know o f any offhand and haven’t been to a beer store in months, but I’m quite fond of (a small amount of) those.

Barrel aged stout you say? I need to track some of this decadent deliciousness down.

I know you’re not. It’s still a pretty quiet county aside from the eastern fringe by 288.

I was just talking to my sister before about how we would use the prison bridge to cross the river before 288 existed. I don’t think that’s allowed anymore.

Yeah, I’m not even sure how to get to the prison bridge. I’ve looked for it a couple times.
